Jessica Helfand, USA + France
Jessica Helfand, a founding editor of Design Observer, is an award-winning graphic designer and writer. A former contributing editor and columnist for Print, Eye and Communications Arts magazine, she is a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale and a recent laureate of the Art Director’s Hall of Fame. Jessica received both her BA and MFA from Yale University where she has taught since 1994. In 2013, she won the AIGA medal.
Anette Lenz, France
German-born Anette Lenz began her career working the design group ‘Grapus’, was later co-founder of the design collective ‘Nous Travaillons Ensemble’ and has run her own practice in Paris since 1993. A professor at the HEAD Geneva University of Art and Design, she has been a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale sine 1999. In 2015, she was made a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres by the French government.
Ellen Lupton, USA
Ellen Lupton is a writer, curator, and graphic designer. She is director of the Graphic Design MFA program at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, where she also serves as director of the Center for Design Thinking. As curator of contemporary design at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum since 1992, she has produced numerous exhibitions and books, and is a 2007 recipient of the AIGA Gold Medal, one of the highest honors given to a graphic designer or design educator in the U.S.
Erik Spiekermann, Germany
Erik Spiekermann – art historian, printer, typedesigner (Meta, Officina, Unit, Info, Fira et al) information architect, author. Founder MetaDesign ’79, FontShop ’89. Honorary Royal Designer for Industry Britain 2007. TDC Medal & National German Lifetime Achievement Award 2011, etc. Now Edenspiekermann Berlin, San Francisco, Amsterdam. Lives in Berlin, London & San Francisco.
Tony Brook, UK
Tony Brook founded multidisciplinary design studio Spin in 1992. The small team, with Brook as creative director, has won national and international recognition. In 2011, Brook guest-curated the exhibition “Wim Crouwel: A Graphic Odyssey” at the Design Museum in London, a major retrospective of the Dutch master. He was admitted to the Alliance Graphique Internationale in 2006 and is the current president of the organization’s UK chapter.
Adrian Shaughnessy, UK
Adrian Shaughnessy is a graphic designer and writer based in London. He is a senior tutor in Visual Communication at the Royal College of Art and a founding partner in Unit Editions a publishing company producing books on design and visual culture. Scratching the Surface, a collection of his journalism, has recently been published.
Astrid Stavro, Spain
Astrid Stavro is an Italian graphic designer based in Barcelona. Born in Trieste, she grew up in the city of Madrid, Spain. She studied graphic design at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design and the Royal College of Art, London. Her Art of the Grid project, developed with Birgit Pfisterer at the Royal College of Art, has gathered international recognition and numerous awards. In 2005 she founded Studio Astrid Stavro, specialising in typography and editorial design.
